The peaceful symbolism of an olive branch tattoo

An olive branch is very much a symbol of peace in our modern society and has been used to this effect in both Britain and the US since the 18th century. The American Continental Congress that gathered in 1775 to try and avoid the start of a full-blown war with Great Britain was thus named the Olive Branch Petition. The eagle depicted on the Great seal of the USA grasps an olive branch with thirteen leaves and olives while many other flags and seals of varying nations also include similar images. Olive branches also appear in many police patches and badges across the world as a symbol of peace. As body art, an olive branch tattoo is often used in conjunction with another image that is widely synonymous with peace and harmony, the dove.
